The NFL Playoffs Are Here: What to Know About Wild Card Weekend
The most exciting time of the football season has arrived. The NFL Playoffs are here, and every game now feels bigger, louder, and more intense. One loss ends a teamβs season, while a win keeps their Super Bowl dream alive. It all begins with Wild Card Weekend, when the playoffs officially start..
How Teams Make the NFL Playoffs
Fourteen teams reach the NFL playoffs each year. Seven come from the AFC and seven from the NFC. In each conference, four teams qualify by winning their division. These division winners are rewarded for being the best in their group over the long regular season.
The other three teams in each conference earn wild card spots. These go to the non-division winners with the best records. That means even if a team finishes second in its division, it can still make the playoffs if it wins enough games.
How Playoff Matchups Are Decided
Once the 14 teams are set, they are ranked from No. 1 to No. 7 in each conference. This ranking is called seeding. The No. 1 seed is the team with the best overall record. That team earns a first-round bye, meaning they do not have to play on Wild Card Weekend and automatically move on to the next round.
Seeds No. 2 through No. 7 face off during Wild Card Weekend. The matchups are always set up so the higher seed plays the lower seed. For example, the No. 2 seed plays the No. 7 seed, and the No. 3 seed plays the No. 6 seed. The higher-seeded team also gets to play at home, which can be a huge advantage.
What Makes Wild Card Weekend Special
Wild Card Weekend is unique because it features six games in just three days. The stakes are incredibly high, and there is no room for mistakes. Teams that barely made the playoffs suddenly have a chance to knock off favorites. History shows that wild card teams can go on long playoff runs, and sometimes even win the Super Bowl.
These games are often fast, emotional, and unpredictable. Coaches take more risks, star players play through pain, and fans see some of the most memorable moments of the entire season. Take a look at the matchups below:
