Titans Beat Chiefs 26-9 Behind Ward's Stellar Performance
The Tennessee Titans (2-12) hosted the Kansas City Chiefs (6-8) at Nissan Stadium in a Week 16 matchup between two struggling teams looking to finish their disappointing seasons on a positive note. The Chiefs entered the game having been eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2012, while the Titans were playing for pride and development after securing the top draft pick.
First Quarter: Defense Rules Early
The opening quarter belonged to the defenses as both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm. Kansas City started with backup quarterback Gardner Minshew under center, but the Chiefs couldn't establish any momentum. Multiple false start penalties pushed Kansas City backward, and Minshew completed just one pass in the quarter.
Tennessee showed more promise behind rookie quarterback Cam Ward. The first overall pick connected with tight end Chig Okonkwo for a 15-yard gain and found Van Jefferson for nine yards. Tony Pollard, who had been heating up in recent weeks, carried the load in the ground game. However, neither team could reach the end zone, and the quarter ended scoreless.
Second Quarter: Titans Strike First
The second quarter started with fireworks, but not the kind Kansas City wanted. After a muffed punt return, the Chiefs found themselves backed up at their own three-yard line. The Titans' defense capitalized immediately, tackling Kareem Hunt in the end zone for a safety to put Tennessee on the board 2-0.
Kansas City responded with some offensive life when backup quarterback Chris Oladokun entered the game. The young quarterback showed mobility and arm talent, connecting with Xavier Worthy for 13 yards and Hollywood Brown for an 18-yard gain. Harrison Butker connected on a 41-yard field goal to give the Chiefs their first lead at 3-2.
But the Titans answered right back with their best drive of the game. Tyjae Spears broke loose for a spectacular 34-yard reception that energized the home crowd. Ward then methodically moved the team down the field, finding Elic Ayomanor for nine yards before Spears punched in runs of 15 and two yards. Ward capped the drive with a perfect seven-yard touchdown pass to Okonkwo, giving Tennessee a 9-3 halftime advantage.
Third Quarter: Titans Take Control
Tennessee came out firing in the third quarter. Ward looked like the quarterback the Titans hoped they were getting with the first pick, completing a beautiful 25-yard strike to Ayomanor and a 30-yard bomb to Chimere Dike. The drive culminated with Ward finding Dike for a one-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 16-3.
Kansas City tried to respond through the air, with Oladokun connecting with Pacheco for a 31-yard gain. However, the Chiefs could only manage a field goal, making it 16-6 Tennessee heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Titans Seal Victory
The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Tennessee. Ward continued his excellent performance, hitting Ayomanor for another 24-yard gain before Spears powered into the end zone from four yards out for his first rushing touchdown of the game. The score pushed Tennessee's lead to 23-6.
The Chiefs' offense completely stalled in the fourth quarter, managing just four yards on their lone possession. Oladokun was sacked three times as the Titans' pass rush dominated. Tennessee added a late field goal to cap off the 26-9 victory.
Looking Ahead
This dominant performance gives the Titans momentum heading into their final two games, with Ward completing 21 of 28 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Pollard added 102 rushing yards, while Spears contributed 52 rushing yards and 53 receiving yards with two total touchdowns.
For Kansas City, the loss drops them to 6-9 and extends their losing streak to four games. The Chiefs will look to regroup as they prepare for their next opponent, while Tennessee will aim to build on this impressive showing in their remaining games.
