Top 5 Super Bowls Ever - #1 Falcons vs. Patriots (2017)
It was February 5, 2017, inside NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Super Bowl LI (51) had been dominated by the Atlanta Falcons. They were young, fast, and confident. Their quarterback, Matt Ryan, had been named league MVP, and his offense had scored more points than any team all season.
Across the field stood the New England Patriots. They were older, experienced, and led by quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick. The Patriots had been to many Super Bowls before. They were known for comebacks. Even so, this one seemed out of reach.
The First Half: The Falcons Take Control
The Falcons came out confident and fast. They moved the ball easily and scored the first touchdown of the game. The second quarter belonged completely to the Falcons. They scored two more touchdowns while the Patriots could only manage a field goal. Atlantaβs defense pressured Brady, and everything seemed to be going their way.
At halftime, the scoreboard read 21β3. The Falcons were in control, and the Patriots looked stunned.
The Third Quarter: Signs of Life
Early in the third quarter, Atlanta struck again. A long drive ended with another touchdown, pushing the lead to 28β3. It felt like the game was over. Many fans believed the Patriots had no chance to come back. But this is where the story changed.
The Patriots finally found momentum late in the third, scoring a touchdown to make it 28β9 heading into the fourth.
The Fourth Quarter: The Impossible Begins
The Patriots got the ball first, and Brady knew there was no time to waste. He threw short passes, moved the chains, and pushed the ball down the field. The drive ended with a field goal. The score became 28β12. It was still a large lead, but the Patriots defense stepped up and forced a punt. The crowd began to buzz.
Momentum Starts to Shift
Brady returned to the field calm and focused. The Patriots marched again and scored another touchdown. Then came a huge moment. New England went for two points and converted it. Suddenly, the score was 28β20.
The Falcons still had the lead and the ball with just minutes left. One smart drive could seal their first Super Bowl win. But a sack and a penalty pushed them backward. They were forced to punt again.
One Drive with Everything on the Line
Brady had the ball one more time. Every pass mattered. Every second counted. He led the Patriots down the field, converting big third downs under enormous pressure. With just over a minute left, New England scored again and completed a two-point conversion.
The game was tied 28β28. For the first time in Super Bowl history, the championship would be decided in overtime.
Overtime: The Impossible Becomes Real
In overtime he New England Patriots won the coin toss and chose to receive the ball. Starting at their own 25-yard line, Tom Brady calmly led the Patriots down the field, completing passes to multiple teammates to get into touchdown range. Then, running back James White took the handoff, was hit by multiple defenders, and stretched the ball across the goal line for the touchdown.
The New England Patriots won 34-28 and completed the greatest comeback in the history of sports.
