Wild Card Weekend: 49ers Shock the Champs, Knock Out Eagles
The San Francisco 49ers pulled off a huge upset in the Wild Card round, defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in a hard-fought playoff game. The win sent San Francisco to the next round—but it came with a tough cost after tight end George Kittle suffered a torn Achilles in the second quarter.
Here’s how the game unfolded, quarter by quarter.
First Quarter: 49ers Strike First (49ers 7, Eagles 6)
San Francisco started fast. Quarterback Brock Purdy led an early drive that ended with a short touchdown pass to Deebo Robinson. The 49ers took a 7–0 lead after the extra point.
The Eagles answered with a long, physical drive powered by Saquon Barkley. Tight end Dallas Goedert shocked the 49ers by scoring a rushing touchdown from one yard out, but the extra point hit the upright and missed. After one quarter, the 49ers led 7–6.
Second Quarter: Eagles Take the Lead, Kittle Goes Down (Eagles 13, 49ers 10)
Philadelphia kept pushing in the second quarter. Another steady drive ended with a Goedert touchdown catch, this time with a good extra point. That gave the Eagles their first lead at 13–7.
Later in the quarter, disaster struck for San Francisco. George Kittle was injured on a catch near the sideline and had to leave the game. The injury was later confirmed as a torn Achilles.
The 49ers stayed composed and responded with a 36-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro. At halftime, the Eagles led 13–10.
Third Quarter: Defense and Field Goals (Eagles 16, 49ers 10)
Both defenses tightened up after halftime. The Eagles added a 41-yard field goal midway through the quarter to extend their lead to 16–10.
San Francisco moved the ball but couldn’t find the end zone, and a late interception slowed their momentum. Heading into the fourth quarter, the defending champs were still in front.
Fourth Quarter: 49ers Take Over and Finish the Upset (49ers 23, Eagles 19)
The fourth quarter belonged to San Francisco. On the first play, wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw a surprise touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey. The extra point was good, and the 49ers jumped ahead 17–16.
The Eagles answered with a field goal to retake the lead 19–17, but the 49ers weren’t done. Purdy led a long, patient drive that ended with McCaffrey scoring again on a short touchdown catch. The extra point missed, but San Francisco still led 23–19.
Philadelphia had one last chance, but the 49ers’ defense held strong. Purdy kneeled out the clock, sealing one of the biggest playoff upsets of the year.
A Big Win with a Heavy Price
The 49ers celebrated a stunning playoff win over the champs, showing grit, creativity, and toughness. Still, the loss of George Kittle loomed large as the team walked off the field. San Francisco moves on, but they’ll have to do it without one of their biggest stars.
