Wild Card Weekend Preview: Packers vs. Bears
The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears are meeting in the playoffs for one of the most historic matchups in football. These two teams have been rivals for over 100 years, but this game feels different. For the first time in a long time, both franchises are being led by new-era quarterbacks and looking toward the future.
Bears Rebuilt Around Caleb Williams
Chicago’s rebuild officially began in the 2024 NFL Draft, when the Bears selected Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick. After years of searching for a franchise quarterback, the Bears finally believe they have their star.
The 2025 season showed real progress. Williams improved as the year went on, cutting down mistakes and making big plays both inside and outside the pocket. His ability to throw on the move and extend plays gave Chicago an offense that looked dangerous for the first time in years.
The Bears made sure Williams was not alone. Wide receiver DJ Moore remained the team’s top target, while rookie receiver Rome Odunze added size and playmaking on the outside. Tight end Cole Kmet continued to be a reliable option in the middle of the field.
Chicago’s defense also played a big role in the 2025 turnaround. Led by Montez Sweat, the Bears pressured quarterbacks better than in past seasons. That defensive improvement helped Chicago stay competitive and earn a playoff spot.
Packers Growing With Jordan Love
The Packers’ recent history is about patience. After moving on from Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay handed the team to Jordan Love and accepted that there would be growing pains.
Those pains started to fade late in 2024 and fully showed results in 2025. Love took another step forward this season, becoming more consistent and more confident as a leader. He spread the ball around and showed strong chemistry with a very young group of pass catchers.
Wide receivers Jayden Reed and Christian Watson gave Green Bay speed and big-play ability, while tight end Luke Musgrave added another matchup problem. Running back Josh Jacobs helped stabilize the offense by keeping defenses honest.
Head coach Matt LaFleur deserves credit for guiding this transition. The Packers stayed competitive while rebuilding and once again found themselves in the playoff mix in 2025.
What This Rivalry Game Means
This Wild Card matchup is about more than advancing. For the Bears, it is proof that drafting Caleb Williams and committing to a rebuild is starting to work. For the Packers, it shows that their post-Rodgers plan with Jordan Love is on the right path.
A rivalry built on history is now being written by a new generation. On this weekend, one young quarterback takes a big step forward, and the rivalry adds another unforgettable chapter.
