Patriots Edge Dolphins 33-27
The New England Patriots ended Week 2 with an exciting 33-27 win over the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. Both teams showed their strong potential for this year.
Teams Ready for Fresh Starts
Both teams entered Week 2 with big hopes after busy offseasons. The Patriots, with second-year quarterback Drake Maye, added experienced receiver Stefon Diggs and rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson to help their young quarterback. The Dolphins wanted to do better after a tough 2024 season with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and star receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle all healthy.
First Quarter: Patriots Strike First
The Patriots quickly showed their running skills, with running back Rhamondre Stevenson pushing through Miami's defense on the first drive. Stevenson gained a lot of yards, creating chances to score. Drake Maye played calmly in his season debut, connecting with tight end Austin Hooper for a key 22-yard play, then finding Mack Hollins for an 8-yard touchdown pass. However, kicker Andy Borregales missed the extra point, so New England only had a 6-0 lead.
Miami's offense had a hard time early on. Tua Tagovailoa almost threw an interception, but it was canceled by offsetting penalties. The Patriots took advantage, and Maye showed off his speed with some scrambles before finding Kayshon Boutte for a 16-yard touchdown pass. Another missed extra point left the score at 12-0 after the first quarter.
Second Quarter: Dolphins Fight Back
The Dolphins found their groove in the second quarter. De'Von Achane showed why he's seen as one of the NFL's best running backs. Achane helped Miami move the ball both on the ground and through the air. The drive ended with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle, showing how dangerous Miami can be when healthy.
New England responded with a careful drive led by Stevenson, who broke free for a 21-yard run setting up a field goal. The Patriots increased their lead to 15-7, but Miami kept pushing back. In a quick two-minute drill, Tagovailoa found Hill for 22 yards before connecting with Achane for an amazing 29-yard touchdown pass. The Dolphins tied the game 14-14 at halftime.
Third and Fourth Quarters: Special Teams Steal the Show
The third quarter had strong defense from both teams. Miami scored two field goals to take a 20-14 lead. The Patriots answered with their best drive of the game. Maye found Stevenson for an impressive 55-yard catch, setting up a rushing touchdown by Maye himself. The successful two-point conversion put New England up 22-20.
The fourth quarter was exciting for special teams. Miami's Malik Washington returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown, thrilling the crowd and giving the Dolphins a 27-22 lead. But Antonio Gibson quickly responded, returning the next kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, putting the Patriots ahead 29-27.
After an important interception by Mapu, the Patriots added a field goal to win 33-27.
Looking Ahead
This exciting opener showed that both teams have great potential but also need to improve in some areas. The Patriots’ mix of Maye's growth and playmakers like Gibson gives them hope for the future. Miami showed they have offensive strength when healthy, but they need to be more consistent.
Both teams will try to build on this thrilling start as they prepare for their Week 2 games, which could further shape their 2025 seasons.
